The book allows discussions around the virtues of 'having a go' at things - and that it is good to try a number of things out before setting your heart on a particular outcome. However Annie is a gifted artist and poet and expresses her upset through this - at which point her parents explain that everyone has their own gifts and talents - and that whilst her syblings are good at playing musical instruments and Annie is not, Annie is good at art and poetry and they are not - helping her recognise that she has her own special gifts. Annie's gifts is an interesting story about a girl whose family are really into music, and whose syblings are talented music students - but each instrument Annie tries she discovers is not for her, and she becomes upset about this.
