Granted, I WAS only 12 when I read 'Homecoming' and had no clue what fending for yourself entails I remember being very enamored of the 'runaway kid living off the land' idea. ![]() As for it being believable or not in a book that they'd be too young to take care of themselves you should try by in it the main character, Dicey Tillerman takes care of her three younger siblings and takes them on a cross country trek one summer, (on foot, with no money), to a long-lost relative's house after their mother leaves them abandoned in their car in a supermarket shopping center and she was only 13. They are violent horse like creatures that love the sea and blood. ![]() These horses are more monsters than actual horses. Every November water horses, also known as Capaill Uisge, come on shore. What is not so great is Johnson's writing. Johnson does a respectable job incorporating the details of the crimes in her story without shying away from the gore - cut-off noses, bowels and heads - it is all here! Jack the Ripper's case is a truly fascinating and gruesome one. Rory soon discovers that she possesses an ability to see ghosts and is eager to assist the ghost police of London in its search for the serial killer. ![]() The strange thing is, she seems to be the only person able to see him. More murders happen in the neighborhood of Rory's school, and one day she crosses paths with the killer. This murderer appears to be mimicking Jack the Ripper - his first victim was sliced and diced in exactly the same manner as the Ripper's in 1888. On the day of her arrival to London she learns that there is a brutal murderer on the loose. They have some serious banter and Quincy loves nothing more than to put Kennedy in his place! As the book unfolds we get to learn a lot about Quincy, and while she might come across as confident and in control internally that is not always what she is feeling. From page one of the prologue Vale and Rose had us on the edge of our seats and the dynamic between Kennedy and Quincy was stellar. I love how she fits in with the guys so well but also has her crew of girlfriends in her new town. She is a former pilot and has worked with this crew when they were all enlisted. ![]() And to be honest, I love when a former playboy falls. ![]() But I always felt like there was so much more to him. Painting: A Peasant Leaving His Landlord on Yuriev Day, by Sergei V. There’s humor but ultimately hopelessness of ever changing the conditions of serfdom. The author comments a lot on language – Russian and French the provinces vs. Each negotiation to buy serfs is different. In the process we learn about life in Russia at the time: masters and peasants He travels by coach with two servants and goes to a lot of taverns gambling. The point was to reduce his tax burden, since serfs were taxed unless he had papers showing they had died. In this story the main character is buying “dead souls” – papers from other property owners whose serfs died (ownership of serfs went with the property). There are more than 2,000 reviews on GR so I’ll be brief. ![]() He’s kind of happy-go-lucky - a drinker, gambler, liar. It’s considered a picaresque novel Don Quixote-ish – a journey with a lot of satire and absurd situations with a rascal as a main character, a man who always has a get-rich-quick scheme going. The book goes way back to 1842, before Russian serfs were emancipated in 1861. ![]() 6/6/2023 0 Comments The white king leanda de lisle![]() ![]() ![]() He is revealed as a complex man who pays the price for bringing radical change Henrietta Maria as a warrior queen and political player as impressive as any Tudor. ![]() In this portrait - informed by newly disclosed manuscripts, including letters between the king and his queen - Leanda de Lisle uncovers a Charles I who was principled and brave, but also fatally blinkered.
